This spacious penthouse is a true living oasis: the living space is open-plan so that some of the rooms flow seamlessly into one another. Our home expert Britta Müller has created an elegant atmosphere with a clever touch for color, furniture and accessories.

Britta Müller first developed a color concept for the design. "I chose grey as the base color for all the rooms," explains the interior design expert. "Grey is the color of neutrality and renewal, it stands for the transition between the familiar and the unfamiliar. It is considered elegant, functional and noble." Furthermore, shades of grey have the advantage that they can be combined with almost all colors and materials. Depending on how they are used, they look cool and minimalist or romantic and playful.

The light gray painted walls form a restrained stage for the individual furnishings and skillfully accentuate them. Matching accents in purple and rosé were used, which develop an enormous luminosity in combination with the rather reserved gray. Purple is the color of idealism and optimism, expressing dignity and mysticism, while rosé, as the color of tenderness and childishness, stands for romance, sensitivity and restraint. In the private area - i.e. in the bedroom and bathroom - only shades of gray and white can be found.

Stylishly put together: the furniture

The furniture creates a visual separation between the individual living areas. The classic and the modern are skillfully combined. The hallway features selected individual pieces, such as a traditional Swedish wedding chest. "Integrating antique pieces into a modern environment is always a challenge. But here, too, you can see how old pieces are given a new lease of life with creativity and craftsmanship and can be appropriately integrated as a memento," emphasizes Britta Müller.

The kitchen is straightforward, simple and functional. Adjacent to it is the dining table, built from found objects: a historic door was refurbished and transformed into a unique piece of furniture using a frame found at an antique dealer. The transition to the living room is peppered with design classics. The Thonet armchair in the bay window relaxation area and the sideboard from USM Haller create a clear line to the playful Swedish display cabinet.

The living room is cozy and two casual leather sofas invite you to linger. Old and new merge into a harmonious combination here, as Ms Müller points out: "Furnishing is always about breaking with style and creating something new in the process. The contrast between furniture with a history and the simple elegance of modernity is particularly appealing to me personally."

Illuminating: light sources and lighting

Functional and effective lighting is a must for every room. "Light gives a room that certain something, creates excitement and spreads a pleasant ambience. It also has a major impact on our well-being and influences our mood and internal clock," says Britta Müller.

The lighting concept in this apartment is precisely tailored to the respective needs. In the transition to the bedroom, the narrow hallway is well illuminated by spotlights. In the bedroom itself, there are ceiling lights and bedside lamps to match the interior. The shade, lined with gold on the inside, creates a cozy ambience here.

For that certain something: pictures and accessories

The very personal design of your own four walls is of great importance for your own well-being. Vacation souvenirs, pictures, vases, favorite pieces, cushions or wooden sculptures give your home that much-desired individual touch and often allow you to draw conclusions about the person who lives there.

"As a basic principle, it should be noted that the human eye perceives odd arrangements of three or five things as more harmonious," adds Britta Müller. "You can play with differences in size or different formats." Even with wall decorations in the form of pictures, care should be taken to ensure that they have a common element. Be it the same framing, the same style or a common color scheme. Experimentation is key when decorating, as unusual combinations can often have an incomparable effect.
