"The apartment is great, it has a large L-shaped living room and kitchen, but it's difficult for us to furnish, we need help." This call from a tenant reached us before Christmas. It was for cases like this that we set up our furnishing advice service a few years ago. Anne Hytry from our furnishing advice team visited the property to get an idea of what was needed and discussed a few ideas with the residents. Here too, it was important to achieve an optimum effect with relatively little effort - both in terms of time and money. During the next visit, the proposed solutions were then discussed on the basis of the following guidelines - naturally taking into account the lifestyle of our residents. The length of the living space can only be visually shortened by using color. This means that the end wall must be painted in a correspondingly dark wall color to visually compress the room. This effect can be further enhanced by painting the area of the sitting area, the sloping wall and the two opposite side walls in the same shade. As the residents had not yet thought of such a "radical" solution, Ms. Hytry suggests painting the rear wall first, in a coffee-brown shade to match their seating area. After that, it will be easier to decide whether to paint more.
The kitchen walls also need a new coat of paint. The sunny yellow wipe-clean look should be painted over in a light color or the wall facing the balcony can be painted the same color as the dining area.
The single crockery cupboard in the kitchen is turned 90° and placed in the room. The resulting subdivision creates a new, cozier structure between the dining room and kitchen. The space gained behind the cupboard now offers room for a cozy, intimate breakfast spot with a view of the garden.
For the living room, a sideboard, floor lamps and pictures will be purchased at the next opportunity - in colors that match the natural brown tone of the existing furniture. The red sofa is kept, but is given cushions in the same pattern as the curtains. These can have a broad spectrum of earthy colors, but they must be dark enough, as the room itself is very light. Here too, the dark shade will visually shorten the room. An old family heirloom, a small two-door wardrobe, is the eye-catcher on the wall to the left of the entrance to the living room. It is made of dark wood and fits perfectly into the room. The CD rack previously placed here will be given a new place in the workroom.
Overall, when redesigning the room, it should be ensured that all elements that visually shorten the room are taken into account - such as keeping the horizontal format of the pictures at the front of the room, but portrait format on the long sides, etc.
Relatively quickly, our members first painted the end wall in the dining room a beautiful shade of brown. Then a new lamp was hung above the dining table and a few green plants were placed accordingly. And as you can see, the effect for this relatively small effort is already huge!
In the kitchen area, the cupboard is now positioned at right angles to the room - that was also done quickly - and creates structure without being restrictive. And behind it, a nice cozy breakfast area has been created.
