Wildflower meadows for insect diversity
Our wildflower meadows are a great sight: The beautifully landscaped meadows are now buzzing and humming with many colorful flowers of all kinds growing in a criss-cross pattern. These provide a new habitat for endangered insects.
Back in the 1980s and 1990s, you could hardly eat a cake at the garden table without insects pouncing on the delicious pastries. Since then, things have become quieter and quieter. The reason for the disappearance of insects: Due to intensive farming, over-fertilization, harmful pesticides, climate change and other aspects, there are around 75% fewer insects than there were around 30 years ago. Insect mortality has become a major problem.
However, these animals, which are often perceived as a nuisance, are very important for the ecological balance. They pollinate many plant species and thus provide food for some living creatures. They are also food for birds and reptiles, among others. We want to do something and make our own contribution so that insect populations can recover a little. That is why the gardening and landscaping company Tannenhof Petersen planted wildflower meadows on our lawns in Goerdelerstraße, Kanzleistraße and Waldstraße last year. This year, they are even more beautiful than last year. And more wildflower meadows are planned to be created from fall 2021.
We have also installed several insect hotels, which serve as nesting and hibernation sites for insects.
