On July 2, 2022, we will once again be celebrating Cooperatives Day and our message is clear: society needs cooperatives!
We will also be hoisting the green flag of the housing cooperatives in front of our headquarters in Flensburg-Weiche on this day, paying tribute to the cooperative idea. Especially in the current times, good and secure housing is more important than ever. However, affordable housing is a scarce commodity, especially in conurbations.
The topic is being discussed emotionally and unfortunately the current political efforts in this field are not very effective. Rent caps or the rent freeze restrict us as housing cooperatives rather than strengthening us. This makes it all the more important for cooperative players in the housing market to highlight their importance loudly and creatively. Around 5 million people currently live in the 2.2 million or so cooperative apartments in Germany.
This is what sets housing cooperatives apart:
- Create new living space
- Are fair landlords
- Offer jobs and apprenticeships
- Important regional economic factors
- Take care of maintenance, modernization and new construction work
